Since Manchester City signed Erling Haaland a few years ago, the importance of the “pure No.9” has been rediscovered across the league.
This season, that trend continues — with Arsenal’s Gyökeres and Manchester United’s Šeško leading the line as classic strikers who thrive inside the box.

Meanwhile, Liverpool took a different approach by bringing in Hugo Ekitike, a “No.9.5” hybrid between a striker and a playmaker, who wasted no time by scoring on the opening matchday.

Will the traditional No.9 once again dominate, or will new hybrid forwards define the era?
Either way, the Premier League promises top-level battles we can’t take our eyes off!

In recent years, we’ve started to see center-backs playing a very different role than in the past—
something often referred to as the “inverted CB”.

While not strictly defined, this role typically looks like:

Defending in a traditional back line when out of possession

Stepping into midfield or wide areas when building up play

Sometimes deploying a defensive midfielder as a CB to act as a distributor or extra midfielder in attack

A clear example is John Stones at Manchester City,
who frequently joins the midfield during possession phases.

What are the goals of an inverted CB?

Add a +1 in midfield to escape pressing

Improve build-up play and control tempo

Offer tactical flexibility between phases

Shift between central defense and midfield depending on the situation

Personally, I believe this hybrid CB role is only going to become more common—
especially in systems that demand positional fluidity and midfield dominance.

近年、CBの役割にも新たな進化が見られるようになってきました。
その1つが、**「偽CB（inverted center-back）」**という戦術的な動きです。

この動きは明確な定義があるわけではありませんが、
以下のような形が多く見られます：

守備時は伝統的なCBとしてラインを維持

攻撃時には中盤やサイドに押し上がり、数的優位の形成やビルドアップの安定化に貢献

場合によっては、DMFの選手がCBとして起用され、攻撃時に中盤的な役割を果たす

実際、ジョン・ストーンズ（マンチェスター・シティ）が
攻撃時に中盤に上がってボールをさばく形は、偽CBの象徴的な例かもしれません。

この「偽CB」の目的は明確です：

プレス回避の＋1を中盤に作る

中盤に流動性を与える

ポゼッション時のビルドアップを安定させる

守備時はCBとして、攻撃時はセントラルプレーヤーとして振る舞うことでシステムに柔軟性を与える

私自身、このようなCBの多機能化・可変化は、
今後ますます広がっていくのではないかと感じています。

In today’s game, it’s become more common to see full-backs move into midfield during the build-up—
shaping a 3-2-5 in possession, while returning to a classic back 4 when defending.

This “inverted full-back” role serves several purposes:

Creates numerical superiority in midfield

Provides greater stability in possession

Offers press resistance and passing options

Maintains quick transitions between defense and attack

Personally, I find it fascinating how one player can give the team multiple identities depending on the phase of play.

That said, playing as an inverted full-back isn’t easy.
It demands not only technical skill, tactical understanding, and positional awareness,
but also strong physical ability and 1v1 defending when returning to the traditional wide-back role.

Without that defensive strength, the team’s structure can easily fall apart.
